Obviously, this is not a new problem, but we want to have an article that we refer to when telling people about upgrading their Android devices. Here it is:
Note: The options might vary slightly depending on whether you have stock Android installed or a customized UI on top of that. For instance, Google Pixel phones have stock Android and Samsung smartphones feature a customized user interface (i.e One UI).
So, now that you have known about the basic reasons to update your Android OS. Let us get started to know how it is done.
For this tutorial, we utilized an Android One device running on Android 10 to show you the options.
The options might look different on another smartphone, but you do not need to worry about that. It is essentially the same – so the steps will be very similar.
1. Launch the “Settings” on your smartphone. Do note that you have to go to the “System Settings“, not the launcher settings (in case you have one installed).
2. Next, you need to scroll down and tap on “System“.
3. Now, on the next screen just tap on “Advanced” to roll down more options available. Here, you will find the “System Update” option as shown in the image above. Just tap on it to start checking for updates. That’s it!
The user interface might vary a bit depending on your manufacturer and the Android version. So, you should also check out the steps to update your Android if you’re on Android 7 or older just for reference:
Step #1: Launch the Settings app on your Android device.
Step #2: Scroll down to look for “About phone” or similar and click on it.
Step #3: Now, you will find an option as “System Updates” / “Software Update“. Just tap on it. Now, it will probably search for an available Android update for your device or would present you with more options.
Step #4: If you find more options after clicking on “System Updates” or similar, you need to click on “Check for updates now” / “Software update check” or a similar button which would start searching for an update for the device.
If you have Samsung’s One UI installed or something else, the options might appear to be different, but it is essentially the same.
So, just for reference, I have included the steps to update your Android OS if you own a Samsung device with One UI:
As you can observe in the screenshot above, you just need to head to the system “Settings” and then navigate your way to “About Phone” by scrolling down.
Next, you will find the option to “Download and Install” the latest update available (if there’s any). That’s it!
Similarly, you can explore the options to update your OS even if the user interface is different on your smartphone.
Note: If Google releases a new Android version, it does not necessarily mean that it would be available for your device. Your manufacturer is responsible for rolling out those updates to your device. So, if you want to stay updated to the latest Android releases, consider getting Google’s own “Pixel” devices.
