How To Migrate Browser Bookmarks (Easy Export/Import)

There are many different browsers in the market today and as such, there are quite a few options for users to choose from. There is not necessarily a “best” browser as different people have different needs. The problem with trying browsers is that you tend to lose your bookmarks and data every time you make a switch, but the good news is that you don’t have to. Our guide will show you how to migrate / transfer bookmarks from one browser to another in just a few steps.

Exporting Your Bookmarks

One of the main things that tend to get lost while migrating from one browser to another is your bookmarks that you might have curated over the course of years. If you don’t want to lose your bookmarks, then exporting them is the first step to bringing it over to your new browser.

Google Chrome

1. Click the three dots to open the menu
2. Go to Bookmarks -> Bookmark manager
3. In the Bookmark manager, click the three dots to open the menu
4. Select Export bookmarks
5. Choose a name and destination of where you want to save your bookmarks
6. Click Save

Firefox

1. Click the Library button
2. Click Bookmarks -> Show all bookmarks
3. Go to Import and Backup -> Export Bookmarks to HTML
4. Choose a name and destination of where you want to save your bookmarks
5. Click Save

Safari

1. Go to File -> Export Bookmarks
2. Choose a name and destination of where you want to save your bookmarks
3. Click Save

Importing Bookmarks From One Browser To Another

Google Chrome

1. Click the three dots to open the menu
2. Go to Bookmarks -> Bookmark manager
3. Click the three dots to open the menu
4. Select Import bookmarks
5. Select the exported HTML bookmark file

Firefox

1. Click the Library button
2. Click Bookmarks -> Show all bookmarks
3. Go to Import and Backup -> Import Bookmarks to HTML
4. Select the exported HTML bookmark file

Safari

1. Go to File > Import Bookmarks
2. Choose Bookmarks HTML File
3. Select the bookmarks file you had previously saved
4. Alternatively, you can also choose to directly import from Google Chrome or Firefox if you are importing from either browser

Saved Usernames And Passwords

Over time, you might have relied on your browser to store login credentials for websites you frequent. Bringing those login names and passwords to your new browser is not an issue, especially if you use a password manager.

Password managers are browser extensions that are available for Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, and all you need to do is download them and install it in your browser of choice, log into it using your login name and master password, and you’re good to go. Some password managers that we can recommend at LastPass and 1Password.
