In operating systems, folders are a great way to manage programs and access them easily. Just like other operating systems, Android also comes with the feature to create folders and manage them. You can easily create a folder and add or remove applications in it as you may like.
Create a folder might not be required for people who just have 5-7 apps installed, but for people with 20+ apps it becomes quite important. It is quite hard to look for a single app when the whole screen is filled with apps. You can Just create 3-5 folders and assign proper names to easily find apps without boggling your mind.
The sole purpose of the folders in Android is to compact things and make it easier to access apps. Unlike Windows, the application itself will not move to the new folder, instead the shortcut to the app will be moved. This means deleting the folder or removing the shortcut from the folder, will not actually remove the app.
In this tutorial, we will show you how you can create a folder in most Android devices and how you can manage it.
Note: This Tutorial is written using the Samsung Galaxy Core 2 phone running on Android KitKat 4.4. The process may not be exactly same for your device, however, it should be similar and easy enough to understand.
To create a Folder, tap and hold any application. As you manage to grab it, you will see more options at the top of the screen. There you will see an option of “Create Folder”, drag the application to it and let go.
You will be prompted to name the folder, just give it a name or tap back button to leave it without a name (you can add the name later). A folder will be created on your phone’s home screen and the selected app will be located inside it.
If the above method doesn’t work for you, then you can tap and hold an app. Once grabbed, drag and drop it on another app and a new folder will be created.
Tap on the folder to open it, if you haven’t given name when the folder was created or want to change the name, tap on the name field located at the top of the window. Now, enter the new name and hit “OK” to assign the name.
To change the color of the folder, tap on menu located at the top right corner of the window. From there, tap on the color which you would like to use and it will be applied. This can be quite handy when you have more than one folder, you can easily differentiate between each folder.
Now that we have created a new folder, it is time to add applications to it. Just tap and hold any application shortcut on your home screen, once grabbed, drag and drop it on the folder to add to the folder.
If you would like to add apps from your App drawer, then tap on App drawer Icon. While tapping make sure you are on the Home page where the folder is located. From the App drawer, tap and hold any app and when you grab it, you will be automatically directed to the home screen where you can drag and drop the app on the folder.
Open the folder and Tap and hold the App which you would like to remove from it. Once it is grabbed, drag it towards the top of the screen where it says “Remove” and let go. The app shortcut will be removed from the folder (again, this will not remove the app itself).
You can also move the app shortcut to the home screen or another folder instead of removing. Tap and hold the app which you would like to move. When you grab it, drag it across any blank area of the home screen.
After a short delay, the folder will disappear and you will be able to see your home screen clearly. Now, leave the app shortcut on any area of the home screen or leave it on another folder to move it to it.
You can move the folder from one area to another just like you move apps. A folder can only be placed on the home screen of the phone, so you cannot move it to app drawer (unless you installed a custom launcher).
Tap and hold the folder and when you grab it, move it anywhere you like and let go to place it.
If you would like to remove the folder, you can easily do it. However, all the app shortcuts inside the folder will be deleted as well, so move any app shortcut if you don’t want to remove it.
Tap and hold the folder and when you grab it, move it at the top of the screen where it says “Remove” and let go. The folder will be deleted along with all the app shortcuts inside it.
