Flac is a lossless audio compression format as opposed to mp3 which offers “lossy” compression. It offers high quality audio, but it is not one of the most commonly supported audio format, unlike the mp3 format. There are still many devices that just don’t support flac files. If you have such a device, you will need to use a more universal format such as mp3.
In this tutorial, we are going to show you how you can convert flac to mp3 format using different method on both Windows and android.
The most comfortable way to convert a flac to mp3 is by using a desktop audio converter app. You will not have to upload and download each file, and the processing will be quite faster as well (depends on your PC).
For this purpose, we are going to use the app Freemake Audio Converter by Ellora Assets Corporation. It is a free to use audio converter tool that supports many audio formats including, flac to mp3.
Download and install the app in your PC. While downloading you will be offered to download additional software (adware), do uncheck the option if you don’t need it. when you will launch the app, you will see a simple, yet intuitive, interface.
To add an audio file, click on the “Audio” button in blue located at the top left corner of the window. You will see Windows “open file” window where you can select the flac file which you would like to convert. You can select more than one file if required, and click on “Open” to add the file.
You will see all the conversion options at the bottom of the interface. Once all flac files are added, just click on “to MP3” from the bottom and you will see conversion options.
Here, under “Present” option you will see a drop down menu where you can select the quality of the converted audio. 320kbps is the best quality and 96kbps is the lowest, the higher the quality is the larger the file size will be.
You can also provide customized “Present” if you want. Just click on “Add your present” in the same drop down menu and you will see options to change Channels, Sample rate and Bitrate.
You can also change the save location of the converted file. Click on the button with “…” (three horizontal dots) icon under the heading “Save to”, and select your desired directory.
When everything is set, just click on “Convert” and the conversion process will being. The time of the process depends on your PC’s power and total size of the files being converted.
Once converted, you can click on “show in folder” button to see the converted file.
If you are not comfortable with downloading/installing a separate app, or if you have restricted access to Windows and can’t download software, then you can also convert flac to mp3 online. You will have to upload and download files, so make sure you have a good internet connection and unlimited or enough data plan to take care of the task.
For this purpose, Convertio is a great tool with an easy interface. It will let you upload and download audio files to and from your Google Drive and Dropbox accounts. If you don’t like these options, you can also upload directly from your PC and receive the converted file via email, or simply download from the conversion page.
Click on the “Select files” button and select the files that you would like to convert from your preferred method. Once uploaded, you will see a drop down menu where you can select the format, select mp3 here.
Now, just select your preferred method to receive the converted file and click on “Convert” to upload and convert. If you didn’t selected any specific method to receive the files, you will be provided a “Download” button once the files are converted.
On Android, you can use a dedicated app to convert flac to mp3. There are many audio converters available on the Google Play Store, but we found Mp3 Converter be the easiest to use with all the required features.
It is a free ad-supported app with a premium subscription that removes ads and provides higher quality settings. Download the app and launch it. In the interface, click on “Add media” at the bottom right corner of the interface and select the audio file which you would like to convert.
Once selected, you will see all the audio output options. Here you can specify channel, frequency, Bitrate (maximum 160 in free version) and codec. When you have selected the appropriate options, click on “Convert” at the bottom to start converting. Once converted, you will be able to see the file in “Your library” option with the save directory written on the top.
