There are many default ringtones already installed on your Android device which you can easily access from the settings to use. You can also download new ringtones or just use any audio file as ringtone.
In this tutorial, we will tell you how to change your notification sounds and how you can get amazing new tones to make every notification amusing.
Change Notification Sound
To change notification sounds, go to Settings and tap on Sound under the heading “Devices”. There you will see different sound options, such as keypad tone, touch sound and Vibrate, etc. To change notification sound tap on “Ringtones”.
There will be two options, Ringtones and Notifications. “Ringtones” will be the tone which you will hear when someone calls you and “Notifications” involves sound of Text messages, emails and other such services. Just tap on “Ringtones” and you will see a list of different sounds, tap on each sound to select and listen to it. When you find the sound that you like, select it and tap on “OK”.
Same goes for “Notifications”, just tap on it and choose the notification sound you like and hit “OK” to set it.
Add New Notification sounds
Now, that you know how to change notification sounds, let’s get to the fun part. Yes, Android does come with quite attractive sounds, but why go for them when there are thousands of other ringtones to explore. You can even create your own tones from clip of sounds. Want to set a specific part of your favorite song as Ringtone, you can!
For this purpose, there are many dedicated apps that will let you explore thousands of ringtones that you can download with just one tap. In this tutorial, we are going to use the app ZEDGE, it is one of the most famous app for ringtones and wallpapers. It has quite good reviews on Google Play Store with a rating of 4.5/5.
Just download the app and launch it. Tap on Menu at the top left corner of the screen or slide from far left to right to bring it out. From the menu, tap on “Ringtones”
There will be different tabs including, Categories, Popular, Featured and Recent. Tap on any of the tabs and you will see a long list of ringtones along with a rating and total number of downloads. Tap on the ringtone which you would like to listen and tap again in the middle to play it.
If you like the ringtone just tap on “Download” and it will be downloaded. If you would like to use it right away, just tap on “SET” and choose from the options provided where you would like to use it.
Set a custom Ringtone
If you didn’t find any good ringtone in dedicated applications, then you can also use any audio on your phone as a ringtone. However, the process is not as simple with android devices. Although there are also apps like Ringtone Maker that will let you create your own ringtone from sound clips and set it, but if you would like to set an audio file as ringtone from Androids built-in system then you need to work a bit.
You will have to first connect your Android device with a PC using a USB port. Once connected, open My computer and open your device from there.
There will be many Folders inside, you need to copy the file which you would like to use as ringtone in “Ringtone” Folder or in “Notifications” folder to set it as a notification tone. The ringtone folder will either be outside with other folder or in media>audio folders. Notifications folder will also be in media>audio folder.
Just copy the file by right clicking on it and choosing copy from the context menu or pressing Ctrl+C. After that, go to either “Notifications” folder or “Ringtones” folder and paste it there by right clicking anywhere and choosing “Paste” from the context menu.
Once done, you should be able to see the file in the “Ringtones” or “Notifications” sounds in your phone.
Assign Ringtone To a Specific Contact
Now that we know how to play around with ringtones let’s get creative and assign different ringtones to contacts. You can add different ringtones to know who is actually calling you without even looking at the phone!
You will be able to listen to different tones when your Boss, spouse or child calls you. Assigning ringtones to contacts is not a built-in feature of all android phones, however, you can get a third-party app to get the job done.
In this tutorial, we are going to use the app Ringdroid, although you can do this with Zedge too, but this app is created around this purpose and it is faster to do with it. The app is quite simple to use and gets the job done perfectly. The app has quite positive reviews on Google Play Store along with 4.4/5 rating.
Just download the app and launch it, you will be able to see all the media files installed on your device (default ringtones on your phone will not be included). Tap on the “down arrow” next to the ringtone you would like to assign.
From the next menu select “Assign to Contact” and all your contact will be shown, just tap on contact to which you would like to assign that ringtone and the ringtone will be assigned.
