NEC’s Real-Time Biometric Authentication for Crowded Spaces

NEC has demonstrated security system advances at CEATEC 2024 by showing the latest version of a cutting-edge multimodal biometric authentication system that combines the world’s leading face and iris recognition technologies.

This system is designed for high-security applications such as access control for critical infrastructure, data centers, and environments where conventional facial recognition might struggle, such as in food processing plants and medical institutions where individuals wear protective gear. It also holds potential for retail environments that require fast and accurate customer authentication for payment handling.

The core of the system lies in its dual biometric capabilities (face+iris). NEC’s algorithm simultaneously processes data from the face and both irises, improving accuracy and reducing the risk of impersonation, even through printed or photographic images. The system is designed to work in various conditions, including dim lighting and when individuals wear helmets, masks, or gloves, making it highly versatile across different industries.

One of the notable advantages of NEC’s technology is its ease of use. It automatically adjusts the camera position to accommodate the scanned person and completes the authentication process in about two seconds, offering a contactless and hygienic solution. This makes it particularly valuable when hands may be occupied or need to remain clean, such as in hospitals or food production facilities.

It works even when wearing hats, caps, and sunglasses!

The system also boasts flexibility and scalability. It can be smoothly integrated into existing infrastructures using a REST API and VESA-standard mounts for easy installation in floor-standing, wall-mounted, or desktop setups. It is both dustproof and splash-proof, allowing for use in covered outdoor environments.

A unique feature of this technology is its ability to authenticate up to 100 people per minute in real time, even in crowded conditions. It continuously tracks and recognizes individuals based on facial and body characteristics, ensuring smooth and congestion-free entry without requiring people to pass through gates one at a time.

NEC’s biometric solution stands out for its high precision, speed, and adaptability, making it suitable for a wide range of high-security and high-volume applications.
