At CEATEC Japan 2024, JVC Kenwood showcased its AI-assisted True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earphones with a built-in miniature camera. The unique feature of these earphones is the integration of a camera that, when connected to a Gen-AI in the cloud via a smartphone, allows users to ask questions about their surroundings and receive audible responses directly through the earphones. This hands-free, voice-interactive system eliminates the need for the user to physically handle their smartphone, making it especially convenient for those with visual impairments or individuals who may benefit from the hands-free operation.
One key aspect of the demo at CEATEC featured the Nearphones HA-NP50T, which were fitted to a dummy head and connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth to access a ChatGPT-like AI service. During the demonstration, users could show an object in front of the earphone’s camera and ask, “What is this?” to receive an immediate audio response, such as identifying a can of cola or a bottle of green tea.
Besides identifying objects, the AI-drive system can also provide more detailed information, such as a caller’s name and company affiliation, or even translate foreign-language signs when needed.
The potential applications of this technology are significant. For instance, the earphones could be a valuable tool for physically challenged users, acting as their “eyes” by offering real-time updates on road conditions or obstacles while moving. Furthermore, the ability to use the intelligent features while listening to music adds an extra layer of convenience, as users can seamlessly interact with the AI without interrupting their audio experience.
Though the earphones are currently in a prototype stage, JVC Kenwood continues to explore their practical use cases and potential to benefit a wide range of consumers, from seniors to visually impaired individuals. The technology could open up new ways to interact with AI while maintaining hands-free, intuitive control.
