IKEA has launched IKEA Preowned, a peer-to-peer online marketplace for buying and selling second-hand IKEA furniture. This initiative, currently being trialed in Madrid and Oslo, is part of IKEA’s broader strategy to become a circular business by 2030, aiming to reduce waste and extend the life of its products. If successful, the platform will be rolled out globally.

Sellers on IKEA Preowned can list their used IKEA items by uploading photos and setting prices. The platform uses AI to add accurate measurements and images from IKEA’s database. Buyers can pick up their purchases directly from the seller, who can choose between direct payment or an IKEA voucher with an additional 15% credit.

IKEA Preowned grants users the chance to buy cheaper furniture through a “channel” provided by the brand.

IKEA Preowned is designed to compete with other online resale platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, where IKEA products already account for a significant share of listings. The marketplace also includes a “care and repair” section, offering spare parts and materials to help users refresh their furniture.

This initiative builds on IKEA’s existing buy-back program, where the company resells pre-owned furniture in stores. IKEA is evaluating the trial’s outcomes to determine the next steps, including the possibility of charging a small fee for the service in the future.

This move aligns with IKEA’s strategy to shift from large out-of-town stores to a stronger online presence, supported by smaller city-center shops. This approach is part of IKEA’s goal to become the leading destination for home furnishing online.
