Lucid Motors has unveiled its three-row electric SUV, the Gravity, marking the company’s entry into the competitive SUV market. Based on the same platform as the Air sedan, the Gravity is expected to have a range of up to 440 miles and a base price of $80,000, with production set to begin in late 2024.
Lucid aims to position the Gravity as a leader in the electric SUV space, highlighting its range, towing capacity, and cargo space. Despite recent challenges for Lucid, including production target reductions and financial losses, the Gravity represents a new opportunity for the company.
The design emphasizes aerodynamics, achieving a target drag coefficient of less than 0.24. Lucid also focuses on sustainability, touting a smaller, lighter, and higher-tech battery pack that requires fewer precious materials and less energy to charge. The SUV features a 900-volt architecture, allowing for rapid charging and up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes on a 350kW fast charger.
Inside, the Gravity emphasizes roominess and cargo space, with fold-flat second-and third-row seats providing 112 cubic feet of cargo space. The interior is equipped with two major screens, including a 34-inch curved OLED display and a second Pilot Panel in the center console.
Lucid plans to incorporate well-being features such as Lucid Sanctuary, designed to introduce tranquility on the go, and Lucid Spaces, offering immersive environments like Lake Tahoe or Joshua Tree. The Gravity is expected to feature the next generation of Lucid’s operating system software, with over-the-air updates.
Lucid Motors, majority-owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, faces financial challenges but aims to overcome them through its relationship with the oil-rich nation.
