Bonn-based industrial designer Benjamin Großjohann has combined his love for vinyl records and mechanical design to create the Coturn CT-01 portable turntable. This innovative audio device is designed with a focus on aesthetics and portability, making it a compelling option for vinyl enthusiasts on the go.
The CT-01 boasts an anodized aluminum body and an integrated glass top. It features a sleek integrated tonearm fitted with an Audio-Technica Stylus AT 3600 needle. When folded up into its travel form, the CT-01 measures a compact 12.5 x 5 x 1 inches, making it highly portable. The design is reminiscent of a larger iPad Pro in terms of form factor but is more compact and manageable.
One of the standout features of the CT-01 is its retracting tonearm, which can be conveniently concealed within the turntable’s body. A simple press on the small indentation along the tone arm causes it to spring back into position, ready to play vinyl records.
The device includes a glass touchscreen control display, adding a modern and minimalist touch to its overall design. It also features an integrated preamp and a USB-C rechargeable battery that provides up to 16 hours of operation on a single charge.
The CT-01 supports Bluetooth aptX connectivity, allowing users to connect it to wireless speakers. Additionally, it has a headphone jack for private listening and an RCA output for analog speaker connections.
Großjohann’s design process for the CT-01 involved traditional methods such as sketching and building physical prototypes, emphasizing the importance of bringing together electronics, mechanics, and design in a cohesive manner.
