Cera, a social care provider and health-tech company, is exploring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce the number of elderly people falling in their homes — consequently leading to a decrease in hospital admissions among this demographic.
Their AI platform, known as the Fall Prediction AI, has shown promising results during a pilot program; The platform utilizes information input by caregivers through a smartphone app to assess the risk of a patient experiencing a fall. Based on this assessment, caregivers can take proactive steps such as ensuring hydration and clearing pathways to minimize the risk of falls.
During the pilot program, which took place in the North West, Yorkshire, and central Scotland, 134 patients who had experienced a total of 29 falls in the preceding fortnight were included. After implementing the Cera Fall Prediction AI, the number of falls decreased to 23, representing a significant reduction of 20.69%. This achievement has been well-received by staff who appreciate the ability to prevent falls and improve the quality of care they provide.
Cera’s success in developing AI solutions for healthcare is attributed to its extensive dataset, which tracks patients’ well-being in their home environments. Additionally, Cera employs AI, including ChatGPT (which got an official Android app in July), to automate administrative tasks and optimize worker scheduling. By using AI to streamline scheduling, caregivers can travel more efficiently between patients, resulting in a 30% reduction in travel time. Cera also explores innovative approaches such as using avatars for staff training, offering a scalable solution to address challenges in the social care sector.
