Phones are optimized to capture voice sound rather than environmental audio. That’s amazing for conversations, but it sometimes feels like the captured image quality is well above the sound quality. Samsung is trying to change this with a new software update that lets Galaxy Buds 2 Pro users record video sound via the two earbuds’ microphones.
Dubbed “360 Audio Recording” by Samsung, recording via the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro microphones uses the latest advances in Bluetooth LE (low-energy) audio technology to record stereo sound in videos, thanks to binaural recording.
Smartphones tend to have more than one microphone, but it is possible that not only are the earbuds strategically placed to record sound as a person would perceive it, but they could have better microphones too.
This very cool usage of the existing hardware could entice people to stay within Samsung’s ecosystem. From what we gather, this would work when the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are connected to an OneUI 5.0 Samsung phone. Samsung explicitly mentions the Z Fold4 and Z Flip4, but hopefully, all OneUI 5.0 phones will be compatible.
Along with this audio update, Samsung has also announced that Galaxy Watch5 and Watch4 will soon be updated to act as a Camera Controller. That could be cool if you’re recording using a tripod placed in front of you, for example. You can use the watch to control the camera’s zoom and shutter/record action.
