Snapchat is now accessible from outside a smartphone, and it will bring a better and more productive experience for heavy users. Like any other social media app, being able to chat and video-call from a computer is extremely useful sometimes.
Interestingly, this Snapchat web app only runs on Chrome, but not Apple’s Safari. Fortunately, Mac users can install Chrome for free, so it’s a mild inconvenience.
Now, Snapchat says Chat Reactions and Chat Reply are supported, but lenses will “roll out soon.” As a first step, this desktop app is accessible to paid Snapchat+ users in a handful of countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The rest of the world will eventually have access.
Some people think this Desktop Snapchat might even compete with Zoom, but both have different use cases, with Zoom being used for corporate and “work” calls. On the other hand, Snapchat is used for fun and by a different crowd.
We don’t deny some overlap with students becoming zoom users in the past years, but it seems more likely that Snapchat won’t be used for school or work on a large scale anytime soon.
