Right now, if you are wearing a mask and want to unlock your iPhone using Face ID, you have to have an Apple Watch. However, Apple is working on a feature in iOS 15.4 that will allow users to unlock their iPhones while wearing a mask even if they do not own an Apple Watch.
The good news is that if you have been looking forward to that feature, especially if you don’t have an Apple Watch or don’t plan to buy an Apple Watch is that Apple has confirmed during its March 8 event that iOS 15.4 will be released next week. The update has been in testing in public betas since January, and now it looks like it’s about ready for primetime.
Keep in mind that this feature will only work with masks and that users cannot be wearing sunglasses and a mask at the same time. Presumably this is because wearing a mask AND sunglasses would obscure a person’s face too much for Face ID to be considered an effective security tool.
In addition to Face ID support for masks, iOS 15.4 is also expected to bring other changes like better anti-stalking features for the AirTag, support for the PS5’s DualSense adaptive trigger, adding notes to iCloud Keychain passwords, and more.
