In an announcement during Qualcomm’s CES 2022 keynote address, the company revealed that they will be working with Microsoft in developing a custom chipset that could be used to power future AR glasses.
According to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, “We’re announcing that we’re developing a custom augmented reality Snapdragon chip for next-generation, power-efficient, very lightweight AR glasses for the Microsoft ecosystem, and we’re integrating into that chip platform software from both companies: the Microsoft Mesh platform, and the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon Spaces XR development platform.”
This is not the first time that Microsoft and Qualcomm have worked together. Previously, Microsoft had worked with Qualcomm which resulted in the SQ1 chipset that was used in the Surface Pro X.
There is no word on when this headset is expected to be launched, but if the rumors are true and Apple is working on their own headset, it will be interesting to see how Qualcomm’s chipsets will hold up against Apple’s own hardware.
