However, that could change with the iPhone 15 which is expected to launch next year. This is according to analyst Jeff Pu who claims that the iPhone 15 could actually offer up optical zoom of up to 10x. That’s pretty insane as far as iPhone cameras are concerned, and it is thanks to the use of a periscope lens.
The rumors of Apple potentially using a periscope lens in a future iPhone isn’t unheard of. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had stated back in 2021 that the iPhone 15 could actually feature the use of a folding lens design that would allow cameras to offer up better zoom. Optical zoom is largely preferred over digital zoom, the latter of which is basically the camera’s software cropping a photo to your subject.
While ultra-wide cameras are more popular, especially for day-to-day photography, telephoto lenses can also be pretty useful. They’re great for portraits since the zoom helps keep a tight frame around your subject, and they can also be useful for landscape photos if you’re trying to highlight specific things, like the snowy peak of a mountain, interesting architecture elements of a building, and so on.
