However, these displays are usually pretty small, which is why BMW is hoping to shake things up with what they’re calling the Theatre Screen. This comes in the form of a massive 31-inch display that will support resolutions up to 8K. This would essentially almost span the entire width of the car.
This is essentially like a TV of sorts, or rather a smart TV because according to BMW, they will be equipping it with Amazon’s Fire TV services which means that users will be able to enjoy the features that would normally be associated with Fire TV. This includes movies and TV shows that they can purchase or stream.
According to Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG Development, “We develop immersive, digital experiences for sheer driving pleasure. In Theatre Mode, the rear of the interior is transformed into a private cinema lounge. With the 31 inch display, 5G connectivity, 8K resolution, surround sound and individual streaming program, an unprecedented experience is created that sets new standards for in-car entertainment.”
The company does not mention if or when such display options will be available in its cars, but if you ever wanted to have a movie experience in your car, short of going to a drive-in cinema, this could be the next best thing.
