We’re sure that most of us at some point in time have experienced a hard drive failure, usually at the most inopportune moment when we need to submit in our work or if we’ve spent hours on an edit, only for it to pretty much all disappear once the drive crashes.
However, that’s kind of like playing the lottery because sometimes, you won’t know when this will happen. In some cases, you might be able to spot some warning signs where your computer gives you error messages, but sometimes it can come out of the blue. However, NAS manufacturer QNAP thinks they might have a solution in the form of artificial intelligence.
The company has created a tool called the DA Drive Analyzer and basically what it does is it uses AI to predict when a NAS HDD might crash. The AI is taught to look out for signs using historical data from millions of drives, meaning that it will learn what caused hard drives to crash and will then look out for those signs on your drive.
If this sounds familiar, it is because Google is also interested in this tech. The company announced earlier this year that in a partnership with Seagate, they are developing a machine learning model that will be able to predict hard drive failure.
