It now seems that WhatsApp wants to attempt something similar of their own. As discovered by XDA Developers and WABetaInfo, it looks like WhatsApp is working on a new feature called Communities. This seems to be like a more advanced version of groups, where admins in groups can actually create groups within groups.
This is similar to Discord where within a channel’s server, there are smaller channels where one can be used for announcements, another for voice chat, another for general chatting, and so on. In a way, platforms like Telegram already offer up something similar where users can join Telegram groups to get updates, product announcements, and more.
WhatsApp also plans on differentiating regular groups from Communities with its icons. Community groups will have an icon that is a square with rounded corners, while regular groups have round icons instead. There is currently no word on when the feature is expected to roll out, but for WhatsApp heavy users, this could be something to look forward to.
