Qualcomm’s Apple Silicon Competitor Will Be Launching In 2023

Last year, Apple launched the first Apple Silicon chipset in the form of the M1, which was then used to power Mac computing devices like the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and iMac. Many have since praised Apple for their efforts, but it seems that come 2023, Qualcomm will be launching their own competitor.

During the company’s 2021 investor day event, Dr. James Thompson, Qualcomm’s chief technology officer revealed that the company would be launching their own PC chipsets in 2023. The chipsets will be designed by the Nuvia team consisting of a trio of former Apple engineers who had worked on the A-series chipset found in Apple’s iPhones and iPads, and was acquired by Qualcomm earlier this year for $1.4 billion.

According to Qualcomm, they claim that their chipsets will be competitive against Apple’s M-series chipsets and will offer “sustained performance and battery life”. It should be noted that this is actually not Qualcomm’s first attempt at creating chipsets for use in computers. The company had previously attempted to launch computers with Snapdragon chipsets.

They also worked with Microsoft for custom chipsets used in the company’s Surface devices, but ultimately it did not manage to garner the same attention or praise that Apple’s M-series chipsets have. Will the company have better luck this time round? We suppose we’ll have to wait until 2023 to find out.
