Ever since Apple killed their plans for the AirPower and introduced MagSafe, it seemed like the company’s plans for a multi-device charger was kind of dead. However, if a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is to be believed, apparently it’s not 100% dead as the company is said to still be developing something similar.
According to the report, Gurman claims that Apple is still working on a multi-device wireless charger. This device is said to be capable of juicing up three devices at once, but it won’t be similar to the AirPower which used inductive charging and is also a pretty common charging method found in other wireless chargers.
Instead, Apple is said to be exploring technology that would allow for short and long distance wireless charging, and that the company apparently imagines a future where its devices can charge each other. So maybe in the future we might see an iMac or MacBook that can be used to wirelessly charge an iPhone or iPad, or the iPhone used to charge the AirPods or Apple Watch, and so on.
The concept of long distance wireless charging isn’t new. Recently we’ve seen companies such as Xiaomi and Motorola have demonstrated similar charging technology, but to date, none of them have been launched commercially yet, so whether or not Apple will be the first to the market remains to be seen.
