Apple’s First AR Headset Expected In 2022 With Mac-Level Computing Power

It’s no secret that Apple believes augmented reality is the future. The company has made various investments into AR tech, and there have been rumors that they are working on a headset for the future. That future might not be too far off because according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, he claims that Apple’s AR headset could launch in the later part of 2022.

Kuo goes on to claim that the AR headset will feature a pair of chipsets, one of which is apparently based on the M1 chipset Apple launched for its Mac computers towards the end of 2020. One of the chipsets will be more powerful and will act as the main processor, while a lower-end chipset will be used to handle the sensor-related aspects of the device.

This will not be a pure AR headset, so don’t expect a Google Glass-like device just yet. Instead, it seems to be something of a mixed reality headset where according to Kuo, it will feature a pair of 4K micro OLED displays from Sony that will allow the headset to support virtual reality as well as augmented reality.

What’s interesting is that Apple plans to make this a standalone device that does not require a tether to other Apple products like the Mac or iPhone. It is unclear how much this headset could cost, but we have heard that it won’t come cheap and that it might be initially aimed at developers rather than consumers, but we’ll have to wait until 2022 to find out how true this report is.
