Amazon has quite a few smart home devices in the market, like smart speakers, smart displays, security cameras, and video doorbells. Recently they also unveiled some new additions for the home, like a robot and a smart thermostat, but that’s not all the company has up their sleeves.
A report from Insider (paywall) has revealed that the company’s next smart product could come in the form of a smart fridge. Smart fridges aren’t new as companies like Samsung have several models in the market already, so presumably Amazon is relying on its Echo network and integration with its retail platform to try and appeal to customers.
Similar to other smart fridges, Amazon’s smart fridge will be able to keep track of food items inside of the fridge. From there, it will know when you’re running low on items and will notify users so that they can then order more from Amazon or Whole Foods, now owned by Amazon. It could even provide recipe suggestions based on what’s available in your fridge so you can dispose of food items that are about to expire.
The report goes on to state that Amazon wouldn’t actually make the fridge themselves, which we suppose is reasonable, and that they might team up with an appliance manufacturer for it. It’s an interesting concept and could further integrate Amazon and its services into the homes of customers.
Amazon is said to have been spending as much as $50 million a year developing the device and even then, it is not guaranteed that it will come to the market, so we’ll have to wait and see.
