About a week ago, a sighting at the FCC revealed that Nintendo could be working on new controllers for the Switch console. It looks like we finally know what they are as the company has since announced two brand new gamepads for the Switch in the form of the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis.
Given how fiercely Nintendo and Sega competed back in the day, it’s actually a little heartwarming to see that both have kind of made up, although Sega’s exit from the hardware business probably had a role to play in this as well. Both controllers are wireless in nature and are priced at $50 each.
However, it should be noted that these controllers can’t be purchased by anyone. Similar to when Nintendo launched the NES controllers for the Switch back in 2018, these new controllers can only be purchased by those who are subscribed to Switch Online, although we imagine that there are probably some enterprising gamers who might sell off their unit, most likely at a marked up price.
There is no word on the release of the controllers, but with Nintendo launching their Expansion Pack Switch Online tier in October that will unlock N64 and Genesis games, we assume these gamepads will probably launch around that time as well, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info.
