Now according to a new report from Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, he claims that the feature might only be available in select markets. What’s interesting about Gurman’s report is that prior to this, his other report on Bloomberg suggested that satellite calling might not come until 2022, so this new report suggests that it will come in 2021 albeit with limited availability and coverage.
It is unclear which are these “select markets” so we’ll just have to wait and see. Also, it should be noted that this satellite communications feature isn’t designed to replace carriers. They are meant to be used for emergency purposes when regular cellular coverage isn’t available or it is down.
It has actually been suggested that maybe carriers could actually work with satellite providers so that everyone benefits, instead of carriers being left out of the loop. It is also possible that is why it might not be available in all markets just yet. Either way, hopefully Apple will have more details to share in the coming weeks.
