The iPhone 13 Is Here, And Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Apple’s Latest Smartphone

It has been about a year since the iPhone 12 series was launched, and as expected almost like clockwork, Apple is back with yet another flagship handset with the iPhone 13 series. For the most part, Apple has kept the variations the same meaning that we can expect the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

There have been rumors that come 2022, Apple might ditch the iPhone mini series, but that’s a story for another time. Today’s focus is all on Apple’s brand new flagship handsets and what kind of hardware they’ll be packing, and what kind of features you can expect from each model, so without further ado, let’s get cracking.

Design

In terms of design, it looks like Apple hasn’t strayed from the iPhone 12’s design, nor would we have expected them to. The company typically keeps its designs around for at least two generations, and with the iPhone 12 being one of the biggest redesigns in recent years, we’re not surprised that they revisited the design with the iPhone 13.

This means that the same flat edges are sticking around along with the camera bump on the back, and also a panel of glass covering the rear of the phone. The main difference here is that  Apple has introduced new color options, where the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 models will come in pink, blue, midnight, starlight, red finishes, while the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max handsets will be offered in graphite, gold, silver, and sierra blue.

While the notch is still there, Apple claims to have reduced it by as much as 20%.

Display

With the iPhone 13 models, Apple has kept the display size the same. This means that the iPhone 13 mini will feature a 5.3-inch display, the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro a 6.1-inch display, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display.

However, one of the main changes is that with the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max handsets, Apple has finally brought ProMotion to the iPhone, which is just a fancier way of saying it has a faster refresh rate. It will be a dynamic refresh rate where it can go as low as 10Hz and up to 120Hz depending on your needs.

Apple claims it will be smart and intuitive enough where it can match the user’s finger swiping speed when moving between apps.

Hardware

Now under the hood is where most of the changes are. The 2020 iPhone 12 was powered by the A14 Bionic chipset and for the iPhone 13, Apple has upgraded it to the brand new A15 Bionic.

It is still built on the 5nm process as the A14 Bionic, and features a 6-core CPU that according to Apple, is 50% faster than the “leading competition”. There is also a 6-core neural engine which when combined with the energy efficiency and new display engine, will improve the phone’s overall battery life.

According to Apple, the iPhone 13 mini will now have 1.5 hours longer battery life while the iPhone 13 will have 2.5 hours longer battery life over its predecessors. These are the same numbers for the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max over last year’s iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max.

For the most part the differences between the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, and the Pro series is minimal. The CPU cores remain the same but the difference will be in the GPU, where the Pro models will have a 5-core GPU, giving it one extra core over the other models.

Camera

When it comes to the cameras, it seems that Apple will not be adding an extra camera to its iPhones this year, but we suppose that’s fine. Instead, Apple has made a bunch of improvements under the hood to make the existing camera system perform even better than ever.

With the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13, there will be a new 12MP wide camera with a new 1.7 micron sensor. It will also have a f/1.6 aperture that will allow 47% more light-gathering. Also, Apple has rearranged the cameras on the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13, where instead of the dual cameras arranged horizontally above each other, Apple has opted to make the cameras diagonal to each other.

As for the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, it will still feature a triple camera setup with a new 77mm telephoto lens with support up to 6x optical zoom. Macro photographers will also be pleased to learn that it can support closeups of up to 2cm.

There will also be a new exclusive feature in the form of Cinematic Mode for the iPhone 13 and Pro models. This basically takes the technique of rack focusing and brings it to the iPhone, where you can achieve those cool focus and out-of-focus effects you see in movies, but with your iPhone.

It is smart enough where it can detect when the subject looks away, thus removing focus from it and onto something else.

Pricing & Availability

If you think that these features will make the iPhone 13 series a phone worth upgrading to, then you might be interested to learn that in terms of pricing, the iPhone 13 mini will be priced starting at $699, the iPhone 13 at $799, the iPhone 13 Pro at $999, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max at $1,099.

The Pro models will also now have a new 1TB option which means that there will be four size configurations users can choose from. The new iPhones will be available for pre-order this Friday and are expected to be released on the 24th of September.
