According to the rumors so far, one of the biggest changes we can expect to see in the Apple Watch refresh this year would be to the design and its display size. If you were hoping to see new health sensors, you might be out of luck. This is despite the rumors initially claiming that blood glucose monitoring could be arriving this year.
However, if these new health sensors are important to you, then maybe you could consider holding off until next year. This is because a report from The Wall Street Journal (paywall) has revealed that come 2022, the Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to come with new health sensors that could measure blood pressure and also a thermometer that could be used to aid fertility planning.
Right now, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is the only watch we know that comes with a blood pressure monitor. However, the current implementation requires calibration using a more traditional blood pressure cuff that needs to be recalibrated every month or so, so it’s less than ideal, but still useful.
We’re not sure if Apple’s implementation will be the same as Samsung’s or different, so we’ll have to wait and see.
The report also goes on to state that Apple is also working on future health features that could detect sleep apnea, provide guidance when a person has low blood oxygen levels, and maybe even detect diabetes. Take this with a grain of salt since we’re still quite far away from the Series 8, but like we said, if health features are important to you in a smartwatch, then the Series 8 in 2022 could be worth waiting for.
