According to the report, they claim that Apple actually completed work on the chip that would be powering the headset and that a trial production of its physical design is ready to start. Apparently TSMC will be Apple’s choice of manufacturer for the chipset, but that shouldn’t really come as a surprise.
The report also goes on to state that while the device will be wireless, it will apparently require another device to tether to it. This is said to come in the form of a phone, tablet, or computer, all of which will be used to handle the more powerful computations needed to display AR/VR images.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Apple would require an iPhone or iPad to act as the headset’s tether. Right now, the Apple Watch still needs an iPhone to be tethered to to receive notifications and calls (unless you own the LTE version). Apple has been dropping hints about their AR/VR plans for a while now without explicitly confirming that they’re developing hardware for it.
When exactly we’ll be seeing this mixed reality headset is anyone’s guess, but if it is ready for trial production, chances are we won’t be seeing it this year and 2022 would be the earliest, if we had to venture a guess.
