Spotify Puts Plans For AirPlay 2 Support On Hold

Back in 2018, Apple announced the next standard of AirPlay which they were calling AirPlay 2. Some of the features of AirPlay 2 include support for multi-room audio, Siri voice control, and better buffering. If you are a proponent of AirPlay and was looking forward to its support by Spotify, you’ll be disappointed to learn that will not be happening.

In a post made on the Spotify Community page, the company has announced that support for AirPlay 2 has been put on hold. There is no word on when it will resume, but based on the wording by a Spotify Community moderator, it sounds like it might have been put on hold indefinitely.

According to the post, “We’ve discussed this Idea internally and while we are working on supporting AirPlay2 in a proper way, we have decided to close it for now. The reason for this is that due to audio driver compatibility issues, this seems like a bigger project that we won’t be able to complete in the foreseeable future.”

While Spotify and Apple don’t have the best relationship, developer Nathan Lawrence notes on Twitter that this is more of a technical issue. According to Lawrence, adding support for AirPlay 2 would involve revisiting how the app processes audio, especially if there is DRM involved, so it’s not as easy as flipping a switch.
