One of the “annoying” things about a lot of machines is that from time to time, they require maintenance. This usually means having to disrupt your day or even your company’s operations to tend to it, but it is a necessity and something that most of us have probably grown accustomed to.

However, Swedish electric boat company Candela has come up with a new electric drive unit for boats that they’re calling the C-Pod. One of the main selling points of this new C-Pod is how little maintenance it requires. The company boasts that it has been designed to have an “almost unlimited lifetime” in terms of use.

They say that the drive unit has a long maintenance interval of 3,000 hours and there will be a lack of oil changes or other types of major upkeep. As the company’s CEO Gustav Hasselskog says, “For the average leisure boat user, this means you can just use the motor and forget about the usual hassle with service and winterization. The C-Pod will outlast you and probably your kids as well.”

As for the C-Pod’s performance, it will feature two electric motors, each with a counter rotating propeller that provides a combined power of 50kW per pod. The use of the counter rotating propellers also helps solve a problem with regular propellers, which when spun too fast can create air pockets and boils the water around it, which not only reduces efficiency, but in turn can damage the propeller over time.
