According to Instagram, “Security Checkup will guide people, whose accounts may have been hacked, through the steps needed to secure them. This includes checking login activity, reviewing profile information, confirming the accounts that share login information and updating account recovery contact information such as phone number or email.”
However, while Security Checkup will help users better secure their accounts after it might have been compromised, Instagram lists down several different ways that users can keep their accounts secure to begin with. This includes features like two-factor authentication, providing Instagram with an updated phone number or email address, and also being aware of DMs claiming to be from Instagram.
The company notes that they will never send you a DM so if you ever receive one, chances are it might be a hacker trying to pose as Instagram to get you to divulge sensitive information, Hopefully the Security Checkup is a tool you’ll never have to use, since it means your account was compromised, but at least it’s there in case you do.
