Microsoft recently took the wraps off Windows 11 and one of the coolest and quality of life features that will be part of the update is a universal microphone mute button. This means that when enabled, your microphone will be muted regardless of whether or not the app has muted it or not.
Right now, if you wanted to mute your microphone across the entire system, you’d have to dive into the settings. Muting it app by app can work, but it can be a slow and tedious process. Microsoft has even made it easy to access where it will reside in the system tray. Prior to this in Windows 10, there is a volume adjustment slider in the system tray but that’s only for speakers and doesn’t have an effect on the microphone.
It’s a minor feature but we think that it will be immensely useful, especially if you work or study from home and join video conferences from time to time, and being able to quickly and easily mute your microphone could save you from embarrassing situations.
