According to a report from DigiTimes (paywall), it seems that Apple’s suppliers have reportedly kicked off shipments for various components related to the AirPods. Based on this schedule, there is a good chance that this means that the earphones will most likely be launching in the third quarter of 2021.
This echoes an earlier report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Debby Wu, both of whom predicted that a third-gen AirPods would arrive later in 2021. The previous report claims that the design will be similar to that of the AirPods Pro, meaning that they might feature a more in-ear design which should make for a better fit.
This means that for the first time in a while, the base AirPods model will be undergoing a design change. As for the AirPods Pro, that might not arrive until 2022. We have heard rumors of a new AirPods Pro with fitness tracking capabilities that could arrive in 2022, so it looks like for now only the AirPods will be updated.
