Your feed on Instagram is basically a collection of posts made by people that you follow. It is also algorithmically sorted where it will be based on posts Instagram thinks you’re more interested in. However, Instagram could soon be adding “Suggested Posts” into the mix, according to a small experiment the company is running.
Right now, Instagram has an Explore tab which is kind of like suggestions where it lists photos and videos from people it thinks you might be interested in based on who you’re following, posts which have been liked by people whose posts you’ve liked, and so on. So in a way, Instagram would kind of be taking posts from there and putting it into your main feed.
What this means is that in addition to people you’re following, you might soon start to see posts from people you don’t follow. This is good for discovery for both consumers and creators, but at the same time, we’re not sure if this could end up feeling a bit too spam-ish. However, Instagram is giving users an option to curate this content by indicating if you’re interested or not, which presumably it will learn from and eventually it will be tailored to your tastes.
It also seems that users can snooze “Suggested Posts” for 30 days, but there doesn’t seem to be an option to disable it permanently, meaning that whether you like it or not, it’s going to be there. That being said, there is a chance this may never happen as Instagram is testing it out, so based on feedback, it may or may not make the final cut.
