Instagram is free which means that in order to make money, the company has to sell ads. The company has already inserted ads into its feed and also Stories, and now it looks like if you’ve been enjoying Instagram’s Reels, those are about to be invaded by ads as well, so don’t be surprised if you start seeing them.
The company had previously started to test out ads in Reels earlier in the year, but now it looks like it has started to roll out to everyone else. The format of the ads in Reels will be similar to those you see in Instagram Stories and feed, so if you’re used to seeing those then this won’t be any different.
The upside is that ads on Instagram can be easily skipped. This is versus ads on Facebook or YouTube where you’re forced to watch the entirety of it or for a few seconds before you’re allowed to skip the rest, so at least it won’t be too annoying.
For those unfamiliar, Reels is Instagram’s answer to TikTok. So far it seems to be gaining in popularity, although we’re not sure if it might have caught up to TikTok yet or if they’re close. Instagram does have the advantage of already being a familiar platform for users and where there are already many established users.
