For those unfamiliar, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft actually provide a lot of the backend to the internet. This includes Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform, and Azure by Microsoft. According to a speculative report from Protocol, Apple might be interested in launching something of their own and have been on a hiring spree for people with experience in cloud technologies, such as contains and Kubernetes. This includes hires from Docker, AWS, and Google, just to name a few.
In a way, this is in line with how Apple operates. Apple is known to try and do everything themselves where possible. We’ve seen this in their products where they control both the hardware and software and the entire ecosystem, so for them to build their own cloud infrastructure is plausible. At the moment it is estimated that Apple pays $30 million a month just to Amazon for AWS, so if Apple could create their own system, that would save them a lot of money in the long run.
However, whether or not this happens remains to be seen, plus even if it were to happen, it might be more of interest to enterprise users than the average consumer, but it would be an interesting direction for the company.
