This is according to a report from DigiTimes where the publication claims that Apple will be cutting the die size for its VCSEL chips that are used for 3D scanning by as much as 50%. A smaller sensor means that the notch won’t have to be that big, which seems to corroborate the claims and photos we’ve been hearing and seeing so far.
However, as AppleInsider notes, Apple’s latest iPad Pro doesn’t seem to suggest that the notch has been shrunk. This means that either the rumors are wrong, or that Apple is still working on the tech or could be reserving it for the iPhone 13 and iOS devices that follow afterwards, like the next-gen iPad Pros.
That being said, a smaller notch isn’t necessarily that big of a deal as it is still very much present. Over the years, we imagine that many iPhone users have gotten used to the notch, so we’re not sure how a smaller notch will have that big of an impact, but we’ll have to wait and see.
