However, there is some good news on the HomePod front. According to an updated support document, it seems that Apple will eventually push out a software update for the HomePod that will allow it to support the lossless audio option. In the FAQ section which asks whether or not the HomePod will support it, Apple mentions that it will in a future software update. “HomePod and HomePod mini currently use AAC to ensure excellent audio quality. Support for lossless is coming in a future software update.”
The FAQ also covers why the AirPods won’t support lossless, namely due to its Bluetooth connectivity. “AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats wireless headphones use Apple’s AAC Bluetooth Codec to ensure excellent audio quality. Bluetooth connections don’t support lossless audio.”
Apple does note that with the AirPods Max, using a wired connection will allow for “exceptional audio quality”, but points out that it won’t be completely lossless due to the analog to digital conversion in the cable.
