Samsung Could Drop LiDAR Sensor In Future Smartphones

One of the newer technologies we’ve seen introduced to our smartphones in recent years comes in the form of LiDAR sensors. We’ve seen Apple introduce this to the 2020 iPad Pro and later the iPhone 12 series. Samsung has also followed suit with the Galaxy Note 20, but it seems that moving forwards, the company could drop the technology.

According to a report from Korea IT News, they are claiming that for future smartphones, Samsung may no longer include the LiDAR sensor. The report is saying that Samsung doesn’t believe that including the sensor will provide a “clear advantage” to the front-end customer, meaning that the company doesn’t believe that the technology is enticing enough to draw customers in.

Right now, the LiDAR sensors are used for photography purposes, where it can help with photography by collecting more data. In addition to photography, LiDAR is also expected to help with mapping, creating 3D spaces, and objects. There have been rumors that Apple is looking to introduce more AR hardware in the future, so it is possible that they are laying the foundation with these LiDAR sensors, although we can’t necessarily say the same for Samsung.

In any case, as it stands we suppose not many customers might know about the feature, so if Samsung were to remove it from future phones, we’re not sure how many would even notice it is gone.
