So where does this leave existing Apple TV owners? Right now, the latest Apple TV supports 4K resolution, but unfortunately due to the fact that it uses a HDMI 2.0 port, it is capped at 60Hz. Presumably the ability to support a 120Hz refresh rate means that the new model could come with a HDMI 2.1 port which would enable 4K at 120Hz.
Also, in case it wasn’t already obvious, the new model wouldn’t suddenly give your TV magical powers and a free 120Hz upgrade. Your TV would have to support 120Hz (or higher) to begin with for this to work, so for those running older TV sets or models that don’t go beyond 120Hz, then you probably won’t be able to fully take advantage of the new feature.
At the moment it is unclear when Apple will be launching the new Apple TV, but we have heard rumors suggesting that alongside the new model, Apple could also introduce a new Apple TV remote.
