Niantic is the company that many of you might know for games like Pokemon GO, an augmented reality based game where players can walk around in real-world locations to catch various Pokemon and play against other players. The company did help make augmented reality games popular and showcase their potential.
However, it seems that Niantic is now looking to expand on that because in a tweet by the company’s CEO John Hanke, he has teased that the company is working on their very own pair of augmented reality glasses. Not much is known about the device, but it looks like it has a built-in lens and a speaker, although we have to wonder if the lens means that it supports prescription glasses.
Exciting to see the progress we’re making to enable new kinds of devices that leverage our platform… pic.twitter.com/yYglk4q89G

Augmented reality headsets aren’t exactly new and we have seen similar concepts in the past. Google tried their hand at making smart glasses but that kind of failed. We have heard rumors that Apple is also planning their entrance into the augmented reality headset market, but that could be a while.
We’re not sure what Niantic has planned for the device since creating it just to play Pokemon GO seems overkill, so hopefully the company will have more details to share in the future.
