Apple Could Use Randomized Serial Numbers For Future Products

Ever wonder how companies come up with serial numbers for your products? It might seem random, but there is usually a pattern behind it that can identify a product type, year it was made, configuration option, and so on. Apple has been doing that for a while now, but it seems that they want to change it.

According to a report from MacRumors, they have obtained an AppleCare email in which it suggests that Apple will apparently be adopting a randomization technique for its serial numbers. This means that moving forwards, Apple products will have a string of alphanumeric characters ranging from 8-14 characters in length that are completely randomized.

This change is expected to take place this year, but there’s no word on when exactly it will be implemented. The report goes on to claim that Apple was already planning to make this change in early 2020, but apparently the COVID-19 pandemic forced Apple to delay their plans. We’re not sure why Apple would change the way they assign serial numbers to products, but it could be a way to help hide certain details.

Like we said, a serial number can give away information about a product, so perhaps Apple doesn’t want its products to be so readily identifiable from its serial number alone.
