A few years ago, Apple launched the HomePod smart speaker. It felt like it was Apple’s response to the influx of smart speakers we were seeing in the market, but as expected, Apple had to put their own spin on it by claiming it had better quality audio and all that jazz. Unfortunately, its high price tag was not appreciated by many.
So much so that fast forward to today, Apple has officially confirmed that the HomePod has been discontinued. In a statement made to TechCrunch, the company says that they will continue to sell the speakers while supplies last and that they will continue to support it through software updates as well as servicing it through Apple Care.
Do note that the discontinuation of the HomePod only applies to the larger model. The HomePod mini is a separate device and Apple will continue to sell that. In a way we can’t say we’re surprised. The more affordable price tag of the HomePod mini has made it a lot more attractive for users who want a smart speaker and don’t necessarily care too much about having the best possible audio quality.
So if you do prefer the larger HomePod, then now is pretty much your only and last chance to get your hands on them before it’s too late.
