This is according to the folks at Patently Apple who discovered a patent from Apple in which it shows a drawing of the iPhone with the cheese grater design along the sides of the phone. According to the patent’s description, it talks about how our mobile devices these days are capable of increased performance, but at the same time it seems that an effective way at managing and distributing heat have yet to be found (at least by Apple’s own standards).
As a result, Apple thinks that using this cheese grater like design with multiple holes for the heat to escape might be a good idea. According to Apple, “These enhanced levels of heat removal, as described above, can result in significant performance gains for the electronic device and can allow for the use of components or operating levels that heretofore may not have been achievable with existing three-dimensional structures.”
Of course, there’s no guarantee that Apple will implement such a device for the iPhone in the future, but it could be interesting if they did and could be one of the phone’s unique selling points.
