However, there is some good news and that is this summer, Sony is expected to issue an update to the PS5 which will allow users to expand on the console’s internal storage. The update will allow gamers to remove the plastic cover off the PS5 and attach a new storage unit. Now it should be noted that gamers can already remove the cover, but presumably the console’s firmware does not allow or recognize additional storage options, but this update will change that.
This is a slightly different approach from the PS4 in which gamers could attach a USB storage to the console and store and play games off it. In fact, the PS5’s competitor, the Xbox Series X, does support storage expansion. We did come across a listing for an SSD for the PS5 back in 2020, but like we said, without software support it would be meaningless.
In addition to allowing storage expansion, the update to the console’s firmware will also increase the speed of the cooling fans in the console that should help keep the heat down and allow the console to function at more optimal levels.
