When the initial round of hands-on reviews for the iPhone 12 were making their rounds, many had praised the smaller iPhone 12 mini. This was surprising as we expected that the iPhone 12 Pro Max would be more favored, but the small form factor turned out to be a pleasant surprise for users who could finally use their phones one-handed again.
However, the popularity was not carried over to real-time sales where it was previously reported that Apple was cutting back on production due to the lack of demand. Now according to William Yang, an analyst at JP Morgan, it seems that Apple could be planning on stopping production of the iPhone 12 mini entirely.
The analyst believes that Apple could halt production in the second quarter of 2021 due to weakening demand. This is based on data which suggests that the larger iPhone 12 models are outselling the smaller model by quite a bit.
There are several reasons why the mini isn’t doing as well as Apple would have liked. For starters, the battery life of the phone is said to be rather terrible. Plus there are also cheaper alternatives in the iPhone lineup, like the 2020 iPhone SE and the prev-gen iPhone 11, meaning that there is less reason to pick up the iPhone 12 mini unless you absolutely want a smaller phone.
Based on this, it is unclear if Apple will be launching a iPhone 13 mini this year, so we’ll have to wait and see.
