When it comes to hardware, Facebook has admittedly fallen short many times. The company has tried to make its own smartphone in the past but that didn’t really pan out, and the company also tried to make its own smart display, which we imagine would have been welcome but given the company’s privacy issues, it’s not surprising that some people were wary about it.
However, it seems that Facebook wants to try again because a report from The Information (paywall) has revealed that the company could be looking to develop its own smartwatch. Facebook’s smartwatch is expected to tie-in with its current services and will work with a cellular connection, thus discarding the need for it to be tethered to a phone.
It will also allow users to send and receive messages from Messenger and WhatsApp. There will also be various health related features and will connect to services like Peloton. Interestingly enough, Facebook is also said to be using a version of Google’s Android operating system, as opposed to its own operating system or Wear OS.
Once again, with Facebook’s privacy issues, we’re not sure how many people would be so keen to have their movement and health information shared with the company. However, the report says that Facebook plans on selling the device close to its production cost, so it is possible that an affordable price tag could be what convinces some users to purchase it.
