When you watch videos on your computer, there’s a good chance that you might be watching it with VideoLAN’s VLC player. It is, after all, one of the most popular video playback apps around at the moment, largely thanks to its ability to play a multitude of video formats as well as being relatively lightweight compared to some of the more bloated alternatives out there.
However, the app’s design hasn’t really changed much over the years, but who can blame the developers? After all, it works, and why fix something that isn’t broke, right? For those who were hoping for a bit of a modern makeover, you’re in luck because according to a report from Protocol, it seems that VLC 4.0 will be coming later this year with some big changes.
This includes changes to the UI which according to VideoLAN will give it a bit of a modern makeover. It also seems that the developers are looking to explore ways that could help VLC generate money, like integrating more content directly into the app similar to what Plex has done.
At the moment there is no date on when VLC 4.0 will be released, except to say that it should be arriving in the coming months, so that is definitely an update worth keeping an eye out for.
