Apple’s Self-Driving Cars Have Doubled Their Mileage In 2020

Apple’s plans for their own electric, self-driving car has to be one of the worst-kept secrets of the tech industry, and a recent report from the California DMV only serves to suggest that Apple is most definitely ramping up their efforts in their testing as the agency claims that Apple’s self-driving cars have logged twice the mileage in 2020 compared to that of 2019.

According to the report, Apple’s cars equipped with self-driving technology have logged a total of 18,805 miles in California. This is versus the 7,544 miles that the company logged back in 2019, which means that Apple has more than doubled the distance they traveled. The report also claims that the number of disengagements are higher, but that’s not surprising given that they’ve traveled more.

For those unfamiliar, disengagements refers to when the car stops self-driving and the human driver takes over. The DMV claims that Apple reported 130 disengagements, which is double the 64 disengagements from 2019, but that’s not a bad thing. This is because on average, this means that Apple’s self-driving cars disengage every 144.6 miles versus 117.8 miles back in 2019.

Apple is reportedly seeking a partner to help them manufacture their self-driving car, and recent reports claim that the company could possibly announce a partnership in the next few months.
