Apple is kind of late to the streaming game, but the thing is, so was Disney, but yet Disney+ is pulling miles ahead of Apple with some believing that Disney+ could even overtake Netflix by 2026. This is why Wedbush analyst Dan Ives thinks that one of Apple’s biggest mistakes in the last decade or so was not buying Netflix.
Speaking to Yahoo Finance in an interview, Ives was quoted as saying, “The biggest strategic mistake, in my opinion, from Jobs and Cook over the last 10 to 12 years, is not acquiring Netflix a number of years ago.” Ives adds that the only way he sees Apple being able to compete on the streaming front would be to acquire a major Hollywood studio.
“We’ve talked about an MGM, a Lionsgate, an A24, otherwise they’re going to continue to sort of be on the outside looking in, and that’s why I think this is something they’re going to be forced into…because it’s all about content.” That being said, no one can say for sure if Netflix would have even sold themselves to Apple to begin with, so even if Apple did try, who’s to say how the deal would have worked out.
Plus, 10-12 years ago, it would have been hard to predict that video streaming would become the next big thing. Apple has attempted to court famous actors, actresses, and directors for its original content, but for the most part, Apple TV+ does feel a bit lackluster compared to the competition. The only upside is that when bundled with the Apple One plan, it does make it a more affordable alternative.
